Good Morning James,
I have been involved from time to time with Gene discussing the whole Boreland "mess". Just like Whalen - Boreland has done a terrible dis-service to the hobby.
You hit the nail right on the head James when you mentioned the color of the hot stamp. Almost ALL Boreland hot stamp chips have the "brass look". The reason is the alloy metal used to create the gold foil for hot stamping. Older hot stamped chips have that real gold look versus a Boreland chip. This holds true for most of the chips he created. Just put a real hot stamped chip next to a Boreland hot stamp and ANYONE could tell the difference.
I don't put as much faith in Gene's information involving who had the rights etc. to the mold. Gene talked to someone at Bud Jones. However, I talked with Billy Capri when I used to shoot crap and buy my cigs inside the Flamingo Capri. The days when I could park my jeep right in front of the "joint". Billy would hand out NCV match plays, 10 cent chips and 2 for 1's to those entering his establishment. Everyone of those chips received I used. Many of the chips Gene claims to be Boreland made, in my opinion, are not. It is always easy to paint ALL chips with the same brush when in fact Boreland actually made "real" chips for casinos as well as fakes.Gene talks about the various dates - however, the records Jerry Wall got from Boreland did not support what Bud Jones told Gene.
In the archives, as well as the old Prodigy posts are some of the best debates involving this issue. Perhaps Andy could find and post them here. If not. than I guess they are lost . I really don't want to get into it again. Gene is getting too old and I don't want to cause him any strss. Best, Mr."P"
