Formatting only works in the body of the message and not the subject line. There is a GOOD reason for this and it is to keep people from messing up the whole index page. Have you ever been reading a thread and noticed all the messages below were centered instead of being at the left and indented? That is because the person who typed the message you are reading at the time turned on centering, but forgot to turn it off. It would cause all sorts of problems if people could format the subject lines.
