Hi John,
Sorry about your modems. I had the same thing happen to me 3 times before I bought a Belkin surge protector (see link below). They have a deal that they will replace or repair any device attached through the surge protector if it's damaged by a lightening strike. The price isn't bad when you consider how much it costs to replace a modem.
