Cobre is very close to Oasis. Cobre became a ghost town in 1938 when the pumice processing plant shut down. The population is listed as a "handful" after that. (Old Heart of Nevada, Shaw Hall)
There is also a story of the Cobre postmaster being arrested for writing money orders, without funds, to cover gambling debts from a local poker game (1921).
I have another article, a reprint I believe, that deals with casinos in the area. I'll read and report! It's ordered and being shipped this week.
Judging from the maps I have, Cobre would be about 7 miles from Oasis. Of course Cobre doesn't appear on any modern maps...
What is now I-80 and State 233, Oasis, might have been something else in the pre-interstate days. I need to find some older maps to see if that was Hwy 40.
No hwy 40 on any maps I have looked at so far, but I'm taking notes and I'll be looking for some confirmation.
