Hey Jill -
I was talking to the author a little while ago. He had me download the software and take a look at it.
Essentially he wrote an engine that handles the basic database functionality and added templates for the different disciplines. We may not always 100% agree, but collecting comics or stamps or coins is very similar to collecting chips - at least from a computing perspective (price, condition, value, scan, references, etc). Effectively done, it should work out very well.
It has some features that I liked but more that I didn't. The import utility provided by the new software did not do a good job (or it may have, but it was very cumbersome to configure) - after 2400+ chips being scanned and stored in Checkmate, I didn't want to start over again. I did like the cloning facility (something that checkmate is sorely lacking) to allow me to copy an entry to a blank record. But overall I did not like the user experience (there's a new phrase for your vocabulary).
My main issue is just that if I can't inherently figure out how to use software within the first 20 minutes - it gets deleted.
Eventually I will get around to writing one that I like, but that's pretty far off (can't even find my copy of Visual Basic right now - in fact can't find my copy of checkmate and I have to reinstall it).
