I had been using Photodeluxe BE (I think it's even more basic than Photodeluxe) at the office and asked for a copy of Photoshop. The company paid for it - mucho money. At the time it was version 6 and now they're up to 7 so maybe you could buy version 6 for a good price somewhere.

I found it considerably harder to use but with the terminology and basic understanding that I got from Photodeluxe (same approach is used in Photoshop), it only took me a short time before I felt comfortable with the basics.
