If I were in that situation, the next time I would refuse to accept the boss's money. Why would I do a "favor" for my boss which involves doing uncompensated work and the responsibilities of handling the transaction, if it goes unrecognized? If I were doing this for a friend, I would not expect anything in return, but a friend would be sure to offer something. Also, the next time, I would ask up front: "What's in it for me if WE win?".
