Having writable CD is great. Virtually all computers today have a CD drive, so you can read your CD backups everywhere. DVD writers are also gaining in popularity. And I saw an ad recently for an external 120 Gig hard drive that uses firewire and USB 2.0. It was only about $300. You can do a full mirror image of your hard drive and them put it in a safe or something.
