Copy all those files, or those that are very special, onto floppy disks. If you have a bigger device, like a Zip drive or Jaz drive, then copy all files to that.
Then do your restore. Also add an Anti-Virus program. After the program is installed and is working AND has the latest up-dates, then scan all the floppy disks (Zip and Jaz) disks. If there are no "hits" then those disks are virus free and can be re-copied onto your hard drive so that you can use them again.
If you are looking to not lose old email attachments, then before you restore, open the emails, open the attachments, do a Save As for each of the attachments and save them into a common folder. Be sure to copy the folder to the floppy disks (Zip or Jaz). Then restore.
For your email directory,,,,just print it out and copy all the names into a new directory after you restore.
Good luck,
