the spacing difference between the brim of the hat and the cane than to recognize the length of the canes.
If you hold the chip so that one of the H&C's is at the 12:00 position and then measure the distance (in your mind) between the left brim and the cane crossing over the top of the brim you will see a significant difference between the two versions. For the Long Cane Version (LCV) that distance is large enough to recognize that the cane does not touch the brim.
While with the regular H&C version that distance is so small it looks like the brim and cane do, or nearly touch.
This seems to work for me when I only have one sample to look at.
