I've seriously considered making my own chip as a sort of business card. I'd include with every trade, and so on. As long as it was obvious what they were, I can't see any problem with this.

As to their collectibility, that's left to fate.

I understand this is different than the issue with Rene's chips, and I'm not disputing that, but to say that individuals shouldn't make chips seems rather off to me.
