This is a problem with scanners of low resolution and color depth. The scanner Scott mentioned (the 670U) is a good scanner but will have the problems you mentioned. The higher end scanners (the next step up from the 650-670 series will be a 1200 by XXX or greater with a 48-bit color depth. You will spend a little more money but will be able to scan the reds and oranges.
