All of the above! (well no fancy frames yet)
I started by entering every chip into a database, which included the date, where I got it, how much I paid. Soon even this became too time consuming, since I sometimes picked up a box of "assorted chips"
For my specific collections, Las Vegas Fractionals, Elko, Roulette, Fakes, Wisconsin 1 and Wisconsin 2, hopefully some day, WI #3. I have some used Dansco albums that I bought bulk from a dealer. Dansco albums are not cheap, but very nice for those special chips.
Chips that I collect, that don't fit in special catagories, or which haven't been placed yet, are in the Red Inventory boxes you can get from dealers. They are cheap and hold lots of chips. Someone could use the flips or cardboard holders and sort these by areas, cities or chip types. It's easy to re-arrange and change as the collection grows. This has got to be the most versatile and cheapest storage system, but not nice for showing off the collection.
I have a bunch of plastic boxes that chips originally came from the Mfg. These are nice, but won't hold chips in flips. Great for things like traders or chips that aren't placed yet.
Last of all, pages in three ring binders with double flips, cut in half. (always saving money) Put the chip in the flip and turn it sideways. The chips don't fall out of the pages, but they can be easily removed or re-organized in the future. Biggest problem with these, is the books get heavy, FAST!
Since I have the clear plastic boxes, about a dozen or more, I use those. But the cardboard inventory boxes are probably the most flexible and economical way to store traders, and chips that aren't prime candidates for showing in groups.
