Donate to your community cupboard, pantry or whatever they call it, cash or nonperishable food. These are entities that provide food to the truly needy.
Offer them a job for a day. If they do it well and you need more help, offer them a job for more than a day.
Don't enable a lifestyle by feeling sorry for people who won't work. Giving burgers to bums might make you feel good. It doesn't do anything to solve their problems. It only keeps them where they are.
I've been homeless, lived in my '61 Ford Galaxy. It was almost 30 years ago, before it was fashionable to be homeless.
Make it easy to be a bum, some people will not only be bums, they'll produce children who carry on the family tradition.
If you want to help somebody, put 'em to work. If you want to perpetuate a problem, reward both the recipiants and the enablers for doing nothing to change the system.
