Grreat story -- even if it is published by a former employer of mine. But I have a stupid question.

The story talks about this guy being into bookies for a lot of money. Can someone explain to me why anyone in Vegas would gamble with a bookie? I mean, back in NYC, they were the only game in town. But how do they make a living in a town where you can bet anywhere?
