Peter; I have found that many of these ashtrays can be purchased at the annual CC & GTCC Convention and casino collectible shows at or below Anderson's prices ... especially the more common ones (let's say cat. value under $10).
After figuring in the shipping costs that ebay sellers pass on to the buyer, it becomes cost-prohibitive to bid on ebay ashtrays that are available elsewhere ... if one has the patience to wait. Tougher trays are another matter.
Also, like other collectibles, condition plays an important part in ashtray collecting. I like to be able to run my fingertip or fingernail around the edges of an ashtray to detect nicks, chips, cracks, etc. Can't do that, viewing ebay ashtrays. One has to depend upon the seller's description. If the seller has not been accurate in his/her description, it's expensive to return heavy ashtrays for a refund.
