Either it's not a good picture, or the chips are crude.
The mold has four cavities, so it makes four chips at a time. There is a water cooling jacket, and I can't tell how the ejector system works. If you want, I can have a guy who runs a design show for this type of machinery take a look.
Last time I was having a "brain storm" it seemed that it would cost about $6000 to make something like this, from scratch. I had a small project, but it would have meant selling 250,000 of the product at 25c ea. to break even.
Figure poker chips at 1 to 2 cents each, (like the common interlocking style in the corner stores) selling price, cost of plastic, time on the machine, and it would take a bigger number to break even, making chips. At 25c a chip, maybe 200,000 chips to break even.
Very rough estimating, ask someone who knows better?
