Parole means you have to serve the max, but on the street. You can often get out earlier than the max for good behavior, and be out, no complications. Let's say a guy gets 3-5, but he's eligible for parole in 3. If he has good behavior, he might be eligible for a COMPLETE discharge after 3.5. If I were his lawyer I might advise him to do the extra 6 months and take a full complete discharge if I knew he was, let's say a gambler, who might be asked to stay away from gamblng as a condition of parole (in NYC gambling is a crime).
