OK, For the most part my above questions can be ignored. Reading through the rest of the posts I found my answer. If the situation is that someone else is the recognized owner of the design, than the solution is to try and acquire the rights from that person and protect them. If he is unwilling to sign them over or unreasonable in his request for selling them than the club may have to come up with a new design.

With my understanding of copyright... it, then, may not be enough to simply alter the existing logo with the addition of a slot card, room key... The base of the design would not be usable as it is protected and any derivative of it may also be a violation. Therefore the only option would seem a whole new concept and design.

I hope it would not come to that though as, like others have said, there is an established identity with the existing logo.
