I remember that. Most, like the Westcliff where I have spent a fair bit of time, used to have three machines, of which 2 were on at any one time, so they had a spare just in case one broke down.
Also, slot machines are still regarded as something that children play here, and the amusement arcades at coastal resorts are full of machines which children can play for small amounts (2p and upwards) for small jackpots (I think the maximum outside a licensed establishment is still around £30).
Until we get big jackpots, slots will never be popular in casinos in the way they are in the US.
