Good tips. I actually tried a grease pencil, but had to rub hard enough to get it off the surface and it took it out of the depressions.

The left chip is more readable when held at an angle, the right one is really clean and has nothing but small depressions.

Heck it's a worn out, old chip. The dirt added to the condition of the former hot stamp.
