The original 13 colonies included territory which ultimately became the first 13 states, plus DC and West Virginia, as well as all or parts of Maine, Vermont, Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama and Missisippi.
Kentucky, in fact, was Kentucky County, Virginia, in 1776, and was divided into the Fayette, Jefferson, and Lincoln counties of Virginia in 1780. Virginia did not give up what is now Kentucky until shortly before it became the fifteenth state in 1792.
