20 Years ago Congress decreed that 3 sites should be studied for suitability. Yucca Mtn., 1 in Arizona some where and a third that I forget where it was but I am reasonably sure it is out west somewhere. So OK I think some studies were done but Later on CONGERESS cut of funding for the other 2 sites. We had MX missles, Star Wars, B1 and B2 bombers, and other more important things to run the National debt up with.
Then of course we also have unrealistic expectations to deal with. Congress seemed to think we should be able to drop and forget the waste for 10,000 Years. The Pyramids aren't 10,000 old and look at them. They have shown a lot of deterioration. Even the Egyptian Language isn't the same.
I will agree that Nevada got the shaft badly but your gripe is with people that have been out of office for a long time. They cut off funding for studying alternate Sites and delaying doesn't help anybody. There just aren't many desolate area's left anymore. Just look at the population increases in Las Vegas and Phoenix/ Tuscon with all of us whiny "Baby Boomer's" that are too old to shovel snow and can't stand to be away from a Golf Course for more than 36 Hours.
It is time to put the fuel rods in a safe location at least temporarily. I dont think sitting in the middle of a corn field is a particularily good solution. The Idea that transporting new fuel rods to a nuke is safe but transporting that same thing back out again 20 years later is Bogus.
Nearly all of the Electricity I use is generated by Nukes. I don't have a problem with that. ALL forms of generation has it's drawbacks. Smoke and CO2, Coal Trains, for Coal fired. Smoke, CO2, and OIL spills from Oil Fired. CO2 from Natural Gas. About the only clean generation is from Wind and Solar power but just think how many acres of windmills and solar panels would be needed to keep you in the electricity you need every day. I wouldn't have any problem with a safe storage site in my back yard. H?ll if I had one they could use it.
OOps I kind of misread your post so I may have gone off the deep end a little.
"Just wondering, has governor Guinn proposed an alternate site, or is he doing what the pols from the other 49 states are doing, and saying "anywhere but here"?"
No I don't think the Gov. has proposed an alternate site.
Like I said origionally I think the Rods should be reprocessed and reused. Just to reduce the amount of waste. Then where ever the waste is stored would have to be a long term comittment to safety.
Sorry for the Rant.
