I've seen this happen. I had a pretty ratty example of a $1 chip (TCR - N5035) from the Comstock in Reno. On a subsequent trip, I found a better example, so I decided to return my crummy one to play next tiem I was there. To my shock, they had changed the rack and had a whole new $1 chip! (V2310) So I picked one up thinking I was stuck now with the extra copy of the older chip. (This was before I realized so many people collect chips and there was such thing as trading!) Anyhow, on a subsequent trip, I found that the Comstock had reverted to the older rack of $1 chips, so on my next trip, I returned my ratty chip to play and all was well. Shortly after that, the casino closed, so now I think it is safe to say that both chips are "obsolete".
