The motto "In God We Trust" was adopted by the U.S. Congress in 1956, two years after the phrase "under god" was added to the Pledge of Allegiance.

"In God We Trust" was first put on our U.S. coinage almost 100 years earlier than 1956 ... in 1864 when it was struck on all copper U.S. 2 cent pieces.
