Due to the importance of this matter I would like to mention and call attention to another virus thread from last week or so. I responded to that also mentioning that I received a virus attached email from another chipboard contributor as well. I did inform him via email and he informed me that not only did he not know anything about the mail but he also has scanned his computer and wasn't even near his computer at the time that it was sent. It seemed very evident that his address was harvested either from here or from someone elses computer and placed on the indescript email. The only reason I opened the mail was that I recognized his name and address. Fortunately with AOL I do not get opened files unless I specifically open them I recognized the suspicious file and deleted it.
It is my understanding that email addresses can be harvested from boards and newsgroups as well as your address book and your email caches on your computer. It is possible that the address on the mail that I received was even from an email sent to or even received from another (third party -- me, the sender and a third member) TCB reader and participant.
It is becoming obvious that something is going around and the senders do not appear to actually be infected. My mail also, (I can't remember the specifics, check the thread below) had different file names and titles than what you are discribing. That means we should be very alert to any strange attachments and titles. They may be various or random names. Incidentally I checked the names of the subject line and the attachment through Symantec and frighteningly they have no mention of them. It could be that this virus isn't even known yet to the AV companies. We should be attentive to all mail even from familiar people. While I suppose it is possible that nobody here is infected and the addresses could be getting harvested from the board. It is also possible and maybe more probable that someone out there is infected and doesn't know it. They have not been informed because the mail is not being sent from their address but someone elses. Therefore, EVERYONE SHOULD UPDATE YOUR AV SOFTWARE AND SCAN YOUR COMPUTER Even if you have no reason to believe you are infected. Something could be lying dormant on your computer spreading to others and then set to hit at a future time.
Again, I am, personally, not opening ANY attachements from anyone. Even people I know.
Hope this helps others. Keep safe out there....
