"...promise to shut up during the next administration." is completely incongruous with "If our leaders do something you disagree with, write them a letter, call them, or send them an e-mail, and make your point."

Criticism that has merit is not only free speech, suggesting that it only be done privately after asking for complete silence reeks of a long-time existance within a system of ego and power. ...and I'm not talking about governmental nor volunteer elected positions.
