I am announcing my candidacy for Treasurer of the CC & GTCC Board of Directors. I too would like the opportunity to be more involved in the Club. (Belinda beat me to the punch).
Since I do not post on the board very often, let me take this opportunity to tell you a little about myself. I have been a member of the Club since the 1997 Convention. I recently became Life Member 54, and I am a member of the Southern California and the Slab Free Chapters. I am a collector of Nevada obsolete chips; mostly of the more detailed inlay chips or chips that have historic significance. I specialize, however, in the Flamingo Capri. I stayed at the Flamingo Capri for a few months in 1974 during a temporary military assignment (no base housing was available). When the chip collecting fever hit me in the mid-90’s, it was only natural that this little casino would be at the top of my want list. Oh, had I only known then what I know now!!!!
I am currently in the middle of selling a home and moving into another home, so I haven’t had much opportunity to view the various boards, until now. But I was very glad to see that Belinda Hixon will be running for Secretary. Belinda will definitely get my vote, simply because I believe that she will represent the best interests of the club.
The office of Treasurer certainly fits my training and background. I have been in the financial arena for more than 25 years and am currently the CFO for an aerospace manufacturing company located in Southern California. I firmly believe in being honest and credible…..above all, dealing in an ethical and fair manner.
Because of the move, I won’t be able to visit the board as often as I would like over the next several days, so I will try to cover highlights on where I stand on some issues.
FINANCIAL
1. The financial statements should be published in the Club magazine, in detail (not just a brief summary), and not just posted on the Club web site (per the By-Laws of the Club).
2. As of March 31, 2002 there was over $150k in the treasury (I realize that the expenses for the convention are not included). Unless the monies are earmarked for specific purposes, I don’t understand why some think that the membership dues should be increased (but I am certainly willing to listen to the reason(s)).
3. The Club has grown to such an extent that it needs to run within a budget. Spending “whatever” amounts on “whatever” needs to be a thing of the past.
4. I purchased a Building Fund chip, BUT, until the Building Fund is properly segregated from the general fund AND shown as such on the financial statements, I am uncomfortable in personally contributing further to this fund.
GENERAL
5. My thoughts on slabbing are as follows: As stated above, I am a member of the Slab Free chapter. I personally do not believe that slabbing is good for the hobby. If you vote for me as Treasurer, I will cast a NO vote for slabbed chips and slabbing companies being allowed in our conventions or any other club sponsored activities. My position on this may or may not be popular, but I think everyone needs to know up front on how I feel about the subject.
I believe that I would be an excellent representative of the Club. I consider myself as a member of the “general” population of the Club and I just want to see the Club grow and prosper in the years to come.
So, in order to become a “valid” candidate, I will need 2 nominations.
Respectfully submitted,
Mike Quinlivan
