All you chinese speaking collectors can back me up on this, the chinese word for 8 rhymes with the chinese work for Luck, "baat" and "faat".

Chinese have always been superstitious (or is it stupid-stitious). Numerology is big in gaming, notice all the Asian whales gravitate to Pai-gow or Baccarrat.

Conversely the number 4 is very bad luck because the chinese word sounds like the chinese word for death, "say".

No true chinese would ever buy a house with the numbers 2 and 4. Two sounds like the word for easy, "yee". Combine it with 4, "yee say", easy to die. Aye-yah, crap players keep away from the hard eight, two fours, even though 8 is lucky. Are we stupid-stitious or what?
