I saw an interesting Discovery channel special on this. Basically you go to a place like the board and get a starting point that you can locate with a GPS receiver, then its kind of a treasure hunt.

Depending on the skill level set by the person running it, it could be a simple one (a few steps and then easy to find) to a cliff on the side of the grand canyon.
