I think maybe, someone missed the point of the article. It's subtile and not well presented, but the problem they are refering to is not reproducing the cards, but reproducing celebrity cards.

Remember the Mickey Mantle card, up for auction? (we squashed that one) Not hard to fake. Someone has an Elvis Prestly card, offered for show as a joke.
The NAME on the card is easy to fake, the card is not easy to reproduce.
