Mike,
Keep in mind that the club does not order these chips. They are a donation from the Hard Rock.
The pre-registration information has been available on the club website and in the club magazine. I don't think there has been anything done here that is unfair. Sure there will be some people who didn't read the information, or forgot to preregister. Of course if these weren't limited to people who pre-registered we could conceivably have a situation where we ran out if attendence was higher than expected . . . then you would have some really unhappy people.
You say that if you hadn't already paid for the travel you would stay home. That would be a big mistake. The Hard Rock chip is hardly a reason to come to the convention. You will be able to buy one for much less than the trip and hotel will cost you. The convention is a lot of fun and you should not miss out on it over the pre-registration issue.
BTW - Last year I gave my HR chip to a hard rock collector who forgot to pre-register and I am sure that I am not the only one who did so. Ask around at the show you might find someone who doesn't want the chip. This year mine is going to a friend who can't attend the convention.
