As Pete pointed out you have to concider your layout. Also as was pointed out memory condiderations, large images load slow, but so does a page with a LOT of smaller images. You need to balance the size with quantity and keep the page filesize manageable for the viewer. But in answer to your question Size matters, most like 'em large! If used correctly (layout).
