I go back and forth with PDAs. I have had 2 or 3 of them and still have a Palm Vx. A good tool if you use them, but an expensive toy if you don't.
There are two main types of PDAs, Palm OS based or Windows CE (Pocket PC) based. Basically the difference is that Palm is an Organizer with some computer function and Pocket PC is a computer with Organizer functionality. Its amazing to think that one of these little PDAs have 200+ Mhz of power and 65-256Meg of RAM. Compare that to 4.77Mhz XT only 20 years ago.
Anyway.... there is a lot of software available for it. You can create your chip lists in Excel and download them to the PPC. You could probably go further with a small database (although you may not have enough memory to have scans). The Compaq IPAQ (IMHO) is the best of breed with the HP Jornada just a step behind. The HP is also the most expensive. They have a few different models so you need to look at them. There is one that has a terrible screen and one that is great. Check out www.epinions.com when you pick the model.
