One center channel directly over TV

Left & right front at eye level on either side

Rear speakers at eye level, may be pointed away from you at each corner (depending on speaker manufacturer's recommendations - I have Bose surround sound, that's what they recommend)

Subwoofer can be placed anywhere, more pronounced if near a corner.
