Just when you thought that things were complicated enough, let me share this with you. First off I am not expressing any personal opinion on the matter, I am just relaying what actually occured at the NY Metro Chapter meeting yesterday.
At the meeting, I brought up the subject of the recent brass core situation in order to educate our members, many of them are not on the internet. I passed around a brass core chip and explained what was going on. In our open discussion, there was some debate, about what occured, not about whether to name name's or make any accusations or present any personal points of view in regards to what actions should be taken. It was educational, period.
A new chipper, but obviously an experienced coin collector, attending his first chapter meeting, posed the following question: "Would it be a good idea to have brass core chips slabbed in order to prove that they are genuine and also to protect them?"
Wow! This newbie joined together the two most controversial issues facing our hobby. No one was able to respond about whether this would be a good idea or not. We are all familiar with the negative side of slabbing and have effectively kept slabs out of the hobby. I do not have a collection of rare brass cores, but I can imagine that someone who does could now be thinking about having them slabbed in order to authenicate them and restore their market value.
Again, I am presenting what actually occurred. I am not proposing that this is good idea. I am posting this idea in order to get feedback from others.
