Each person can customize their view to automatically show messages for a certain number of days. But, when you read a message, all messages in that thread are shown regardless of the date they were posted. If you reply to a message that is older than the view you have selected, it will appear to be "loose" when you are at the main index screen because you've told the software not to show the rest of the messages in the thread due to their age. But, if you click on the message you will see that it is in it's correct place in the thread.
