A look back at the past....(NCR)

From the Las Vegas Review-Journal, dated Monday, February 28, 1955.

"Planned Resort Hotels Here Reach Value of $37 Million

Construction of resort hotels in the Las Vegas area, either building now or on the planning boards, totals approximately $37,000,000-----more than the total construction program in the city of Las Vegas from 1905 to 1935, it was indicated today.

The building plans indicate the terrific growth of this area as presented today in the Golden Anniversary edition of the Review-Journal, tracing the history of the community back to its real beginnings.

Breakdown
A breakdown on this figure follows: Under construction but not yet open for business $24,000,000, involving seven separate concerns; $7,000,000 involving two hotels which have land and plans and are ready to ask for the necesary permits to start building; and $6,000,000 involving one hotel for which land has been purchased and preliminary discussions on construcation now are being held.

In addition to the seven "Strip" hotels now operating in Las Vegas, providing luxury accommodations for thousands of visitors and featuring the biggest names in show business, five more resort hotels are under construction on the "Strip" and nearing completion. Opening dates for most of the new ones have not been set, but they all are expected to be serving guests before summer.

The existing "Strip" hotels are: Sands, Thunderbird, Desert Inn, Flamingo, Last Frontier, (soon to be changed to New Frontier), El Rancho Vegas, and Sahara.

On the Boulder Highway last year was opened the Showboat, another resort hotel not in the "Strip" area.

The new ones, representing an investment of approximately $18,000,000 in the community are: Riviera, Dunes, Royal Nevada, Stardust and Desert Spa.

Located on West Bonanza Road, the Moulin Rouge costing approximately $2,500,000, also is nearing completion.

Work has started on the 10-story Fremont hotel at Second street and Fremont, which will cost approximately $3,500,000, and will add to the busines district downtown, with both entertainment and resort type accommodations for guests. The new hotel will predominate the skyline in downtown Las Vegas, where the tallest buildings now are three stories.

In addition to the construction now in progress, there are two other resort hotel companies ready to start construction on the "Strip." These are the Lady Luck and the Tropicana, which will involve an investment totaling about $7,000,000. Land has been purchased and architects' drawings completed.

Others are in the discussion stage. One of these is the proposed El Morocco, to be located between the Riviera and Desert Spa, which may cost as much as $6,000,000.

Buliding for the resort hotel industry is an important factor in the over-all economy in Las Vegas, as there are hundreds of building trades workers who have steady work just building new resort hotels in Las Vegas.

Completion of the new enterprises immediately creates jobs for hundreds of people needed to provide the service for which Las Vegas has become famous."
