I believe all those things happened and a lot more. as you said in your earlier post, The Czar certainly ruled with an iron thumb.
On the same token, being in the Czar's army wasn't a personal choice, it was more like the only choice.
When the first World War came along it was these same soldiers that fought to liberate Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia.
