Did I ever tell the story about walking into a coin shop in Las Vegas and discussing chips with the guy working there?
This was probably 1997 or so give or take a year. It was a couple of years before I started collecting chips. I asked him if a lot of people collected casino chips and he said that the market just wasn't mature yet. He showed me some old Flamingo chips and then started bragging about how he just recently purchased a large amount from a recently closed casino for something like $10,000 and then he had the chips destroyed "to help the market".
Now, I'm not 100% sure I believe him, but the thought of that sickened me to the point that it actually kept me from starting to collect chips for about two years.
Sigh...
