I found this ashtray at a flea market in Maine last weekend. Outdoor flea market… in Maine… in February. This has been the strangest winter in New England that I can remember.
The ashtray has two applied decals. The front of the Harvey’s decal can be seen where a decal would normally be. The back of the Great Smoky Mountains decal can be seen on the underside of the ashtray. Both decals are UNDER glass. There appears to be a hollow pocket in which the decals were applied. When I purchased the ashtray there was a small amount of condensation in this pocket (apparently it was kept outside overnight), but a few days of slowly drying the glass has removed all the condensation with no damage to either decal. Obviously there is a seam in the glass somewhere, but I can’t see it. Quality work for what it is.
I’ve come to the conclusion that this is some sort of experiment by the ashtray manufacturer, or perhaps an amateur glass blower. Has anyone ever seen an ashtray of this sort before? I would appreciate any thoughts. Thanks.
