"I'm not for slabbing....far from it, but we've gotten along just fine the past 10 years or so without an "official" grading system and I do not think we really need it now. It will only lead to "price differences" between grades and that was my biggest fear with slabbing." ... Steve P.
Steve- There always have been price differences between grades... to think otherwise is only deceiving oneself. You can't convince too many people on this bb that the "used holed/notched" chip you have illustrated ... compared to one in excellent condition (if one exists) ... would grade the same... or sell at the same price.
It was because there is no grading standard in the chip collecting hobby which is what has encouraged the slabbers to attempt to gain a foothold. At this point in time, it would appear that the slabbers have been turned back... if only temporarily.
Times change Steve. Nothing stays constant. You're right. It's not 1990 anymore. I still vividly recall when you and others on prodigy were referring to me as a "dinasaur" because I was not up to speed with the computer age times... and that "nobody should be elected (or re-elected) to club office unless they were on-line." Now we have club officers who are very proficient with their computers in this information age ... but we seldom hear from them.
Unless the club adopts a reasonable standard that most members can live with; I'm very concerned that we will again be leaving it up to others outside the hobby to do it for us. Wouldn't it make more sense for those who are committed to seeing this hobby grow and prosper, put something down on paper that most collectors could agree with ... and if the slabbers decide to enter once again, they would be forced to accept the club's standards rather than standards they will attempt to impose upon us?
