I just got a chip in the mail the other day and I recall the postage itself for 1 chip was .45 . I think I have heard that you can get up to 4 or 5 chips in one envelope for that same postage. When I evaluate the S/H charges on an auction I consider this. In addition I figure that the padded envelopes cost money and the seller may have to personally deliver the envelope to the PO. Therefore I consider $1.50 or $1.75 as reasonable. I also look for sellers that state that multiple items will be shipped in the same package for reduced shipping, or that they will ship additional items at no cost. I would like to mention though that there are some items where you will probably not find this and that is acceptable. That would be large or heavy items. For example, I was a little ticked off when I won 2 lots (12 decks ea) of Playing Cards from one seller. I inquired if he would reduce shipping on multiple items. He said yes and quoted me a .25 reduction. I just sent the full shipping anyways. I got the package and noticed that his shipping charges were right on for the Priority Mail shipping. The deal is this. Decks of cards, while not that big are heavy. 24 decks are heavy enough that I guess they fall under Priority Mail. It does cost almost 2x the price to send 24 decks as it does 12.
I would just say consider what you are buying and it's size and weight. Also consider the cost of packing materials like the padded envelopes or bubble wrap and a little for delivery of the items to a local post office. Here in the Chicago area it is hard to imagine anyone being more than a couple miles from a post office. In fact, I have three within a couple miles of me. However I do consider that some people may not have one that convenient to them. As for shipping materials, I have had some people just throw the chip in an envelope sandwiched between a couple pieces of an old cereal box. Others actually put the chip in a flip or ziplock bag, wrap it in a small piece of bubble wrap and put it in a padded envelope. While the latter may be a little overkill, it does show some attentiveness to getting your chip to you safely. Those packing materials do cost the seller and I am willing to pay a little for their effort and concern. It is better than the pictures, I have seen posted here, of broken chips when the sellers just put it in a standard envelope. It makes you almost want to cry when you see an old obsolete arrive to someone in little pieces.
