The MGM Betty Boop is artificially high in price. It has somehow received more attention than others because it was probably the first LE to sell out within a day or two of issue. It became "news" and got a reputation. It was hoarded.
Try this... how many people have them for sale? For years the MGM BB was advertised in the club Mag. If it was that rare, wouldn't you think the supply was limited?
Not to rain on anyones parade, but I was offered over 60 of them at $8 each back in the days of Prodigy as the chippers home. (better here since we can all participate) The catch was I had to take all or none and I didn't have $500 to invest in casino chips, which would take me years to recover in dribbles. Ask the person who bought them from the lady in Florida. Maybe he sold 20 by now and has the investment back?
Why doesn't anyone talk about the Ty Murray chip, that is just as "rare" and came out at the same time? How come there is such a disparity in value? (I know, it's image and demand) But which one is actually harder to find?
Funny how that works. Many dealers have the Betty Boop for sale, but few have the Ty Murray. BB is offered for $25-30 and Ty the Cowboy $10. Both issued in 1994, both issued in the same quantity. Boop was kidnapped and hoarded, Ty rode the open range. (sorry)
But down to the bare facts. How many people are looking for a Ty Murray chip? It's all about image.
