Last Monday's razing of the King Midas Cardroom in Emeryville (Ca) caught most by surprise, but fortunately a member of the Emeryville Historical society was able to do a little urban archaeology on the site, mainly looking for old artifacts which predated the card clubs. Several bottles from the 1890s were found in the basement rubble, and about 20 poker chips. Two of the chips were from the Key club, the type of the last entry under Key card club in Eastman's book and were of the 500.00 denomination. Most of the remaining were of the King Midas Club and were of the 100.00 denomination. In July 2002 the Oakland Public Library will have a display on Emeryville history and will include a display of the cardrooms. If anyone has any photos to loan, historical info or anecdotal information, please e-mail me. thanks.
