Vicki; In the coin "industry" as they now call it (not hobby)... the term is called "cracking out". Coin dealers buy slabbed coins which they feel are undergraded as a matter of routine. They break apart the holder with a hammer and resubmit the same coin to the 3rd party grader/slabbers as "raw" in the hopes of it coming back at a higher grade. Higher grades translate into higher value or higher prices. This is what slabbing is all about, and why so many collectors are opposed to slabbing becoming a way of life in our hobby. Let's keep our hobby a hobby and don't give the chip slabbers a chance to stick their camel's nose under our hobby tent. Before we realize it, the whole damn camel will be in our tent and as all camel owners can verify .... it's very difficult to remove a camel once they are fully inside.
