It is very unlikely that current chips will ever be certified and encapsulated, Barry. If some desperate casino did make such a deal, collectors would have the option of paying a handling charge for this service or passing on this chip. Similar to what happened several times already when casinos decided to sell chips over face or in sets to collectors. Most collectors boycotted the issue and they found few buyers.
The sports card analogy fails in that baseball cards are not issued for the purpose of playing a game, with the issuer making a commitment to buy them back at the purchase price.
If collectors ever accept chip grading and certification, it will be because there is a need for it and the premium paid is worth it to the purchaser.
One final point, remember that our club is named the Casino Chips and GAMING TOKENS Collectors Club. There is much more of a rationale for grading and encapsulating gaming tokens. Most token collectors will accept buy only high grade or unused tokens for their collection. Grading WILL become an issue for tokens as the number of token collectors expands. Let's don't get in the position where our club gets somehow committed to banning a service that has great value to some of its members.
