In 1978 I lived in Malibu, teaching at Loyola, LA. I got one ticket to the football game from a friend and four tickets to the parade from yet another friend. So I planned on taking two cars to the parade at 4:30 or so in the morning; letting my wife and kids return in one while I went to the game. Item one. My car wouldn't start. Item two, my oldest kid said her "very very best friend, I ever had wants to go to the parade and could she have my ticket?" Item 3, stupidly forgetting how long it would take my wife to motor back, I said yes and the upshot was that in addition to sitting through a small earthquake, I got to watch the parade and the game from my living room just as I did every year in S.Dak., Mich. & N.Y.
