On eBay, I won this highly desirable $1 Bicentennial Chip from the Silver Slipper casino in Las Vegas. The picture in the scan showed a clean chip with some table wear, probably cleaned. Here is a scan of both sides of the chip at 150 DPI resolution.
At first glance this looks like a fairly nice chip and it looks like I got a good deal on a good chip. But looking at the chip up close, it somehow did not look right so I took out my 3x/5x magnifying glass. Under the glass this chip is a dog. It has been harshly cleaned by someone trying to scrape out all the dirt out of the mold with some kind of instrument. The mold is badly damaged. Here is both sides of the same chip at 4x magnification, 600 DPI resolution.
Look at the inner and outer circles around the H&C's. The inner circle is fairly smooth, except for a few digs in various locations. Now look at the outer circle. It does not appear to be smooth, but is mostly ragged. I believe this is because of all the scrapes left by the cleaning instrument. Also look at the H&C's themselves and see all the damage and the digs into the chip. You still cannot see how bad this chip looks, but I think you can get the idea. You can even see that it appears that there is a partially removed cigarette stain on the 2nd set of scans on the H&C at the 9 o'clock position. This chip is definitely going back. Get a magnifying glass and examine any suspect chips.
