After the Dunes closed, the final rack of chips ended up in storage in the charge of a lawyer in Las Vegas. At one time, the chips were to be offered to collectors in bulk lots. I remember back around 1995 when we collectors on the Prodigy bulletin board were anxiously making arrangements to buy a bunch and split them up. It never happened.
I understand that Gaming brought pressure on the lawyer and he did not dump them. However, a few dealers (including JerryW) were able to get a limited quantity and made them available at chip shows in the late 90's. Then it was announced that the entire lot of "golf course" chips had been destroyed. There were even people who said they witnessed it. It never happened.
After the dust settled, the chips somehow ended up in the hands of several dealers and became available and relatively low cost to all. Sets of the 13 table and baccarat chips (including the monster 25,000 chip) were sold for a few hundred dollars. The hoard still exists and you can buy as many of these old Dunes chips as you like from the Las Vegas chip dealers. You can also buy them one at a time at "retail" prices on eBay every week if you prefer [g]. We will probably never run out of Dunes Golf Course chips, except for the $25K pumpkins, of which only 2 hundred were made.
There is, of course, the hoard of earlier chips buried in concrete at the Dunes and dug up as the building was demolished and Belliago construction began. Someone else can tell this story and explain how you un-warp chips and get hardened cement out of house molds [g].
